(7) Khajuraho Magic: Introduction.
And once we’ve gazed upon the brilliance of Varahamihira’s legendary square in the last blog post; the stage lights shift, the curtains rise again, and our next Star steps forward: The enigmatic Khajuraho Square!
Though subdued and hidden in the erotic poetry written in the stones more than a thousand years ago; it tells through the lovely numbers about the glory of Indian Mathematics and Magic Squares. This little adorable Magic Square is a great example of rich convergence of Mathematics, Art, Architecture, Tantra-Yantra, Religion and History.
We Indians are largely unaware of this great Mathematical marvel, a real Hero, engraved in Stone in ancient Dev Nagri Script placed right at the entrance of Parshvanath Temple at Khajuraho!
It's English translation in an Imaginary Khajuraho Style Photo is as below:
( Only the numbers are real in this photo.)
The Mathematical marvel of Khajuraho keeps on quietly whispering, ensuring not to disturb sleeping naayikaein (नायिकाएं): "You all distracted humans… I’m the real treasure! Focus on me, I’m the intellectual one here! ”
While taking countless selfies, the humans overlook the real Magic Square's pleas and keep on watching the unreal bending-stretching-voluptuous Apsaras carved and exposed on the walls of the temples in Khajuraho.
Who would ordinarily want to see numbers in the erotic land of Khajuraho!? But Math lovers are differnt. They find beauty in the exposed numbers too!
Let us too marvel at this Magic Square in which the sum of each row, each column and each diagonal is equal to 34; a Magic Constant for this square.
But this was not enough for the Creator/Creators of this Magic Square. They ensured that sum of four numbers written in the four corners is also equal to 34. In addition, sum of all four numbers of all nine smaller 2x2 squares is also the same i.e. 34. No matter which path you take in this Square, the Universe gently nudges you toward 34 saying : “Relax, everything aligns, eventually!"
In Hindi 34 is called चौंतीस or चौतीस. And this is how this magic square is known as Chautisa Yantra ( चौतीसा यंत्र).
(Always keep this Chautisa Yantra with you! The Gods and the gorgeous, albeit rather stony, beauties of Khajuraho may bless you and you may finally start glowing at the age of 63 plus!)
Many more facts of this चौतीसा यंत्र are illustrated in a diagram given below:
Later on Many Mathematicians constructed their own Magic Squares and became world famous. (We will discuss about them too, serially.)
However the Creator of such a grand and most versatile 4x4 Magic Square is not known today. This Magic square created in 10th century is a Pandiagonal/Diabolic/Nasik and Perfect Magic Square; much more mathematically accomplished than many celebrated squares of relatively recent era. Still absolutely nothing is known to us about their creator!
The Khajuraho Magic Square quietly sitting in the corner, radiates genius and pretends that it doesn’t care about attention and is quite content with the current celestial arrangement: permanent backstage connection with the Gods and the famously alluring Beauties! Why go viral when you're already in such a premium company!?
I am hoping the blessings received by the Magic Square from God and the damsels maybe, just maybe, magically transferred to me also! Afterall I keep Chautisa Yantra in my pocket all the time!
